How Does the Adoption Process Work?

If you're an expectant mother considering adoption, understanding how the adoption process works can help you feel more confident about your next steps. At Family Life Services, we believe in empowering you with information and support throughout your journey.

Here's how the adoption process works, step by step:

Step 1: Get the Facts. Start by talking with an adoption professional to gather information. This conversation isn't a commitment to an adoption plan. It's simply an opportunity to learn whether adoption might be right for you and your baby.

Step 2: Select an Adoption Agency or Attorney. If you choose to pursue adoption, you’ll need to select an adoption agency or attorney to represent and guide you throughout the process. You have the right to speak to multiple agencies or attorneys to find someone you feel comfortable having guide you through the process.

Step 3: Create Your Adoption Plan. You're in control of every decision. As you create your adoption plan, you get to choose:

  • The adoptive family

  • How you want your delivery and hospital stay to go

  • What level of contact you'd like after placement

  • The support you'll need as you navigate your feelings after the adoption is finalized

Step 4: Choose Your Baby's Family. Your caseworker will share profiles of carefully vetted families, each evaluated to ensure they can provide a safe, loving home and open to your specific background and health history. Take your time getting to know them and select the family that feels right. You can decide if you choose a family from photo profile books or if you include calls, virtual meetings, and face-to-face meetings to help you make your decision.

Step 5: Make Your Decision. After your baby is born, you'll have time to decide whether you’d like to parent your baby or move forward with the adoption.

Step 6: Find Ongoing Support. Your relationship with Family Life Services doesn't end at placement. We'll connect you with support groups and counselors to help you process your experience and find healing for as long as you need.

You don't have to navigate this alone. Family Life Services is here to walk alongside you with compassion, respect, and unwavering support.
